  320. The 1994 Bike Ride Across Georgia, also known as B.R.A.G., is coming
  321.  to South Georgia the week of June 11 through the 18th.
  322.  
  323. The ride starts in Bainbridge* and ends at St. Simons Island.  It will
  324.  pass through, Cairo, Thomasville*, Quitman, Valdosta*, Adel, Tifton*,
  325.  Irwinville, Fitzgerald, Douglas*, Alma, Waycross, and Jesup*.  The 
  326. counties involved are  Decatur, Grady, Brooks, Lowndes, Cook, Tift, 
  327. Irwin, Ben Hill, Coffee, Bacon, Ware, Pierce, Wayne, and Glynn.
  328.  
  329. We are starting the planning and recruiting process for providing Amateur 
  330. Radio communications for this event.  Consequently, we need to make 
  331. contact with various radio clubs, repeater operators, and individual
  332.  operators in the area that would like to help support this event.

  482. presentation in rec.radio.info (even with cross-posting, only one message, with
  483. a unique Message-ID, is propogated across the net).  This tag also facilitates
  484. a pre-existing method of dropping or cancelling the articles locally within the
  485. discussion groups if you don't want to see them.  This accommodates individuals
  486. who want to separate the bulletins from the discussions, discussions from the
  487. bulletins, as well as those who are adamant about not reading another
  488. newsgroup and wanted to see everything all in one basket.  
  489.  
  490. With the total size of Usenet (in number of newsgroups and total traffic)
  491. doubling every year or so, this is no insignificant contribution to reducing
  492. information noise and chaos.  Making the discussion groups a catch-all, and
  493. making extra newsgroups filters on that catch-all, is also the most realistic
  494. way to implement such a scheme (It's not intuitively obvious what the charter,
  495. contents, and general appropriate topics for each and every newsgroup are.
  496. Seeing FAQ's and charter/intro postings in the home newsgroup is beneficial
  497. for new readers).
  498.  
  499. By cross-posting one only is adding a few tens of bytes to each bulletin (to
  500. specify the extra group on the Newsgroups line), but are adding the capability
  501. for very powerful filtering features available on most news servers,
  502. listservers and readers.  Your local news guru could probably explain these
  503. features in more detail.
  504.  
  505. In rn, for example, according to Leanne Phillips in her rn kill-file FAQ, add
  506. a line of the form:
  507.     /Newsgroups:.*[ ,]rec\.radio\.info/h:j
  508. either in ~/News/KILL (if you don't want to see rec.radio.info articles
  509. anywhere) or ~/News/rec/radio/amateur/misc/KILL (if you don't want to see them
  510. just in rec.radio.amateur.misc).  The latter method means your kill file will
  511. only be consulted during rec.radio.amateur.misc (and hence runs more
  512. efficiently), and will probably work for most people.

  514. In nn, according to Bill Wohler in his nn FAQ, add a line of the form:

  516. in ~/.nn/kill (if you don't want to see rec.radio.info articles anywhere), or
  517. put the following lines:

  521. at the end of ~/.nn/init in order to see all the rec.radio.info bulletins first,
  522. then read the remaining rec.radio.* without the bulletins.

  526. If you are new to Usenet and are not familiar with the terminology, you might
  527. want to read the general introductory articles found in the newsgroup
  528. news.announce.newusers. Doing so will make your life on the net much easier,
  529. and will probably save you from making silly beginner's mistakes.

  531. If you think that at this moment you are reading an echo, a conference, or
  532. a bulletin board, I'd also strongly suggest a trip over to
  533. news.announce.newusers.

  538. A moderated group means that any article that needs to be posted to the group
  539. has to be accepted by the moderator of the group. Since we need to ensure that
  540. followups to an article (discussion) do not show up in the rec.radio.info
  541. newsgroup, the `Followup-To:' header line contains a newsgroup that is
  542. appropriate for disussions about the specific article.

  546. Rec.radio.info is a moderated newsgroup, which means that all articles
  547. submitted to the group will have to be approved by the moderator first.

  567. There are three broad categories of articles which will be rejected by the
  568. moderator:

  570. 1) Requests for information: rec.radio.info is strictly a one-way street.  I
  571.    receive information in my mailbox; I then post it to rec.radio.info.
  572.    Requests for specific information belong in the normal discussion newsgroups.
  573.    If your request gets answered, you might consider passing the answer on to
  574.    rec.radio.info, though. Especially if you can edit it into a informational,
  575.    rather than a discussion, format.

  577. 2) Obvious discussion articles, or articles that appear unsubstantiated.
  578.  
  579. 3) Commercial stuff: a relatively unbiased test of a radio product would be
  580.    accepted, but any hint of for-profit might be reason for rejection. For three
  581.    reasons: This is not the purpose of the list, for-profit is a controversial
  582.    topic, and this list may be passed onto Amateur Packet Radio (where
  583.    for-profit is prohibited except under certain provisos).
  584.  
  585.    rec.radio.swap (or possibly comp.newprod) may be more deserving of the
  586.    posting in any matter.
  587.  
  588.    Similarly, copyrighted material generally cannot be used.  If it's TRULY
  589.    worthwhile to the net, I would recommend obtaining permission from the
  590.    copyright holder.  Please note the source, and if permission was given.  I
  591.    reserve the right to make the final decision concerning appropriateness in
  592.    all situations.  In most cases, a brief summary of, or pointer to, the
  593.    copyrighted information may be all I can allow.

  640. Yes, there is! It may take a bit of chatter with the moderator, but we are
  641. willing to take responsible people and provide them the means of posting the
  642. articles directly from their site. We will try everything we can as we fully
  643. realize that DX (distant signal) and astronomical data can be somewhat
  644. transitory. We are also willing to allow regular posters of information the
  645. same courtesy, even if the information is not as time critical.

  647. We refer to this as self-moderation, which is partly based on the model for
  648. news.answer. This requires co-operation and good will to be beneficial to
  649. the community in the rec.radio hierarchy.
